Come up and go crazy, March 4-6, 2011


Friday, March 4th

5:30-7 pm  Meet the Plungers Dinner at the Bayfield Inn  Dine with the brave plungers and watch the movie of last year’s zaniness.  Enjoy a great Italian meal at the Bayfield Inn for $7.  All proceeds go toward the Bayfield Recreation Center.

7:00 pm Luminary Hike on the Brownstone Trail  Walk or snowshoe the Bayfield Regional Conservancy’s beautiful Brownstone Trail lighted by candles set in the snow.  Meet at the Rec Center.

8:00 pm Cannonball & Bellyflop Contest with Water Ballet at the Bayfield Rec Center  Try out your best cannonball or bellyflop.  Don’t miss the Swimmin’ Women doing water ballet!  Only $2 admission.

6-9 Night sledding on Manypenny Ave. 

 

Saturday, March 5th

 

 

8-12 Ice Fishing Demonstration   Expert guide Craig Putchat will demonstrate the gear and skills to catch fish from on top of frozen Lake Superior.  Gear provided for you to try out - shacks, cameras, rods and more.  Head on to the lake just north of the ice road at the end of Washington Ave.

9-4 Dogsled Rides on the Big Lake

Snow Ryder Dog Sled Adventures will be providing dog sled rides from downtown Bayfield on Lake Superior.  Ride with a guide or drive your own team of huskies.  Tickets available at the Bayfield Rec Center. $40 per person, kids free with paying adult.

 

9:30-4:30 Skiing at Mt. Ashwabay  Downhill or cross country ski at our great community ski hill.  Tubing 12-4.  

11 am Run on Water (or ski, walk, bike, snowshoe, skate…)  This family fun event is open to people of all ages and skill levels. Participants can choose to run, walk, ski, snowshoe, skate or even bike the 5-mile course on the famous ice road across frozen Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island and back.  Register at the Bayfield pavilion 10-11 am.  Snowshoe and ski rentals available, and tech support for bikers.   If there is no ice road this event will be cancelled.

11-4 Kiteboards on the Lake  Watch boarders and skiers fly across the lake using massive kites.  You can even take a basic lesson and try it yourself on the ice off the Broad St. beach.

11-4 Art Show on Madeline Island Cross the ice road to Madeline Island and browse works of local artists at the LaPointe Center Art Guild & Gallery.  Call 747-2801 for details. 

11-1 Jewelry Making at Water Music Jewelry and Art Drop by 13 S. 2nd St. and make your own glass necklace.  Only $6 for materials.  Kids welcome.

12-3 Hand Massages and Parrafin Treatments Enso Wellness Center & Day Spa will be offering FREE hand massages and $5 Parrafin treatments at the Bayfield Pavilion.  Stop by and learn about the incredible massage and spa services at Enso!

12-3 Softball on Ice  Watch teams play on the lake east of downtown Bayfield, or join in the game yourself. 

12-4 Apostle Highlands Golf Course Icebreaker Open 
1-3  Manypenny Madness Carnival
Sledding down Manypenny Avenue, kite flying broomball, penguin egg hunt in the pool, kid activities and use of the Bayfield Rec Center. FREE!

1:30 Human-Powered Dogsled Races  Teams of 5 will pull dogsleds for a chance to win prizes.  Last minute entries accepted, next to the Bayfield Rec Center.

2:30-4 CORE Senior Social at the Bayfield Inn  Watch the plunge from the warmth and safety of the Bayfield Inn, sponsored by CORE.

3:00 pm Polar Bear Plunge 

Watch brave volunteers parade then jump into frigid Lake Superior through a hole in the ice to raise money for the Bayfield Recreation Center. Judge the plunges and the costumes.  Better yet, do it yourself!  Pledge forms are available at the Bayfield Rec Center or register online at www.bayfieldreccenter.com.
Note the new plunge location at the city marina behind the Bayfield Inn!

5:00-10:30 Mt. Ashwabay Winterfest Bash  Finish off the day with a ski, chili tasting, tubing, live music, food, adult beverages and a bonfire at the Mt. Ashwabay Recreation Area.  Sample chili from the area’s best restaurants, ride the tubing hill and rock to Corey Carlson inside the tent.  Free BART buses will be running to/from downtown Bayfield 4-11 pm.  $10 wristband for anyone 6 and older.  Wear your season pass and get in for free.

 

 

 

Sunday, March 6th

8:00-12:00 Breakfast at the Pier  Head to the Pier for this special, a la carte breakfast with proceeds going towards the Bayfield Rec Center.  All patrons will receive coupons for the Pier’s upcoming “March Madness”.

9:30-4:30 Skiing at Mt. Ashwabay  Downhill or cross country ski at our great community ski hill.  Tubing 12-4.
